Amy didn’t get a reply but decided not to overthink it. It rarely did her any good, so she sat down with her nose in a book, determined to do something relaxing with her time off!

The day was here that Amy was dreading and looking forward to all at once. Eden had finally convinced her to get out on the waves. The day was looking beautiful. Amy was super excited, but the churning at the base of her stomach was telling her she was making a mistake.

“I still can’t believe I’m going to do this.” Amy stood on the golden sands armed with a surfboard courtesy of Eden’s Essentials and wearing a wetsuit she’d managed to squeeze into. They’d walked a little further around the beach, past Amy’s trusty rocks, to the popular surfing spot, and Amy felt a huge thrill as well as the knot in the pit of her stomach.

“We’ll start on the sand for now, and then we’ll venture into the sea.”

Eden was an excellent teacher. She was clear with her instructions but not patronising in doing what Amy imagined was seriously basic teaching. Amy wouldn’t describe herself as particularly fit, but she didn’t live a sedentary life, always on her feet, but just doing the basic ‘pop up’ had Amy’s arms aching, and her core was seriously protesting. Amy felt like she had practised her ‘pop up’ a million times before Eden thought she was ready to do some basic paddling in the sea. The temperature took Amy’s breath away, but nothing was going to stop her now.

“Right, let’s just get used to paddling with the waves as they push you towards the land,” Eden explained whilst holding Amy’s board steady for her to clamber on. Amy nodded and laid down on the board, feeling a huge thrill about finally doing something for herself. She’d spent her life doing everything for others. Doing something for herself was such a novelty. It felt good!

“You’re doing so well, Amy!” Eden exclaimed with a big smile. “Let’s try a couple more paddles with the waves before we try a pop up! I think you’re ready.”

Amy was so determined, her mind going over everything Eden had explained to her so far.

After many failed attempts, lots of being knocked off, under and over the board, and lots of mouthfuls of salty water, Amy managed her first ‘pop up’ on the board, and the thrill she felt was unreal. The adrenaline kicked in, and as she could feel her heart pumping, she felt exhilarated.

Amy managed it a handful of times, and each time was exactly the same huge thrill.

“I think we should stop there for today as already tomorrow you’re gonna feel it.” Eden hadn’t kept Amy out for long, and she felt almost disappointed when Eden called her back out. “You’ve been amazing for your first time! I can see you really getting into this,” Eden added whilst scraping her wet hair back into a bun on the top of her head.
